Equations are the result of setting one expression equal to, less than, or greater than another expressions.
The manipulation and solving of equations is what Algebra is really all about. For example an equation might define the relation between the amount of rain in a month to how much grass grows. Often equations are manipulated so that they are set equal to zero.
Understanding how to manipulate equations is fundamental to mastering Algebra.
Examples of Equations:

- [katex] 3x+7=0 [/katex]
- [katex] 3x^{2}+2x-7\gt0 [/katex]
- [katex] -b +\sqrt{\frac{2a}{6}}=14[/katex]
- [katex] 11-3x\le 12ab[/katex]
- [katex] \left( x+1 \right)\left( x-2 \right)=x^{2}-x-2[/katex]
